Cobequid Community Health Centre

Summary

This project consisted of a new 125,000 sq.ft. medical facility that incorporates ambulance bays, emergency services, diagnostic imaging, endoscopy, ambulatory care, hearing and speech clinic, diabetes management, administration, laboratory and building services.

Dumac Energy provided complete mechanical and electrical consulting engineering services for this project, including plumbing, heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, medical gas distribution, fire protection, building automation system, lighting, emergency power distribution, non-emergency power distribution, fire alarm, security, nurse call system and communications.

Mechanical Building Features:

  • The domestic water system was designed to incorporate two separate water entrances for 100% redundancy.

  • Chilled water for mechanical cooling and dehumidification at the air handling units was provided by a central chiller plant coupled with evaporative coolers.

  • The building is equipped with six variable air volume 100% outside air handling units with glycol heat recovery coils. Variable air volume control was used to ensure the required air change rates were met, and as an energy conservation measure.

  • A complete medical gas system was designed to supply air, oxygen and vacuum throughout the facility.

Electrical Design Highlights:

  • The building power distribution centre includes two utility feeds, a large central UPS and an emergency power distribution system.

  • Category 6 Communications voice and data wiring were provided to suit all layouts and specialized equipment. A telehealth network system was also included.

  • The electrical design included a supervised Audio Visual Nurse Call System which was microprocessor controlled, RS-485 data link networked, multiplex cabled and was designed to accommodate up to 3,968 beds with up to 31 Master Stations, 31 Conversation Paths and/or 27,776 monitoring points.

Dumac Energy provided a complete engineering package beginning with conceptual design, preparation of detailed engineering drawings and specifications, and on-site review as the facility was constructed.
